rona-makenzieRona established the Continence Advisory Service for West Essex commencing in 1987 and held the post of clinical nurse specialist and service manager until April 2008. Prior to 1987, she held a number of posts in acute and community services in clinical, educational and managerial roles.

Rona is currently responsible for clinical services for women with post natal voiding dysfunction and obstetric related anal sphincter trauma. Her role involves clinical practice, education for doctors, midwives and midwifery care staff, audit and clinical development.

In 1999/2000, in conjunction with staff from Princess Alexandra Hospital Maternity Unit in Harlow, she led the development of a care pathway for women with voiding dysfunction following childbirth and a system of care for women sustaining anal sphincter trauma, establishing a nurse led perineal clinic.  This innovative work was recognised in the British Journal of Nursing Clinical Practice Awards in 2002 and the Nursing Times Awards for Continence in 2006.

Rona has spoken at the International Continence Society Congress for the past four years, in New Zealand, Rotterdam, Cairo and San Francisco as a member of the “Lower bowel dysfunction” workshop team. Her specialist subject being conservative management of obstetric related anal sphincter trauma.
